Fremont making late-season push with win

"By Justin Johnson (Standard-examiner correspondent)
SYRACUSE -- With their foot firmly on the pedal, the Silver Wolves are burnin' rubber toward the postseason.
Riding a strong finishing second half, the Fremont High School boys soccer team roared to its 10th consecutive victory, knocking off Syracuse 3-1 in Region 1 action on Tuesday afternoon.
The win secured the league's No. 2 seed in next week's state 5-A tournament and its ensuing home field advantage in the first round.
"The first half we weren't pinging the ball around, the second half we did," Fremont senior forward Corey Craynor said. "We have a strong defense and that helps us to not worry knowing we're solid back there."
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Fremont roared to life in the 42nd minute when junior Alex Stimpson rattled home the equalizer.

Play tightened over the next 15 minutes until Craynor delivered the game-winner, edging through the Titans' backline to get one-on-one with Syracuse goalkeeper Alex Turbyfill. Trying to cut down the playing angle Turbyfill charged out, but Craynor blistered off an angled shot to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute.

Two minutes later, freshman forward Jordan Preator added an insurance goal with a breaking left-to-right shot.
"We started out the season really slow, but we're starting to learn the system a little bit and getting used to playing with each other," Fremont coach Bryan Gines said.

Since losing 5-0 to Davis on March 30, the Silver Wolves have run off 10 straight victories, including handing the Darts their only loss of the season last week. Fremont has outscored its opposition 28-7 during the surge.
Syracuse's Brandon Carillo scored the Titans' goal in the fifth minute on a header."
