Fremont ends Davis win streak - Justin Johnson (Std Exm correspondent)

Every streak will end.

It's something the Darts knew was inevitable.

While no one on the Davis High School boys soccer team wanted to lose, the players and coaches have admitted for several weeks that their streak of consecutive games without being scored on has increasingly piled the pressure on a team with far loftier goals.

"Our goal this season is to play for the state championship," Davis goalkeeper Brackin Flitton said. "That's what we're focused on. The streak is second, or maybe even third, for our team."

Facing Region 1 rival Fremont on the road last week, Davis saw its 11-game shutout streak end in overtime to the Silver Wolves, as they took their first loss of the season by a 1-0 decision.

Between Northridge's 77th minute goal on March 9 and Fremont's 87th minute tally on Thursday, Davis went 970 minutes without allowing a goal. That mark fell just four minutes shy of the state record set by Brighton in 2006.

The Bengals streak, coincidently, also ended in a 1-0 overtime loss in the state 5-A championship game.

During the streak, Davis outscored its opposition 42-0, and now has a goal differential of 54-2.

"It's a lot of pressure," said Flitton after Davis' 5-0 win at Weber last week prior to the streak ending. "I'm nervous to see what we do if it ends."

While the Wolves' goal ended the streak and decided the outcome of the game, it turns out Flitton and the Darts didn't have much to worry about, as they picked up their 12th shutout of the season just 24 hours later. That victory, an 8-0 result against Clearfield, clinched no less than a tie for the Region 1 title for Davis. It's the second consecutive league title for the Darts, and fifth in six years.

"A lot of teams will fold under that kind of pressure, but these boys, they thrive off that pressure," Flitton said. "That pressure makes them play better."

In addition to the end of the Darts' winning and shutout streaks last week, the loss to the Silver Wolves also ended a spectacular individual streak.

Senior forward Casey Black, 5-A's leading goal scorer, was shut out for the first time since April 30, 2009, a span of 15 consecutive games scoring at least one goal.

Just as the Darts bounced back against the Falcons, so did Black, who notched a hat trick to up his tally to 22 goals this season.

"We knew we had a good team, but to play to the level that we have; to do this well at this point of the season is just outstanding," Black said.
"It's been a dream; to be a senior, and my last year; it's great."

And even though their collective streaks are over, the Darts still feel like this is a dream season heading into the final two regular season games this week.

The state 5-A tournament kicks off May 11.
