Deseret News coverage of Fremont-Alta Playoff Game

"SANDY — Alta senior Derek Boggs found the back of the net in the 49th minute on a beautiful shot from about 20 yards outside the box to lift the Hawks to a 1-0 first-round victory over Fremont.
"That was a heck of a shot," remarked Alta coach Lee Mitchell. "You don't see that everyday."

Credit Fremont goalkeeper Kevin Mead, who blocked eight shots on goal before letting the game winner slip by.

"I just looked up as the ball was rolling to me. (I) saw that I had a few yards in front of me so I took a touch and let it fly," said Boggs after the game.

Alta took 22 shots in the game — 11 on goal — compared to seven by Fremont, which definitely was the difference in the game. That message was echoed by Mitchell after the game.

"You do what you can, we want to play our game and we like to keep possession of the ball and take shots," said Mitchell. "You can't score if you don't shoot, so we were happy with the result."

The Hawks knew going into the game that Fremont was going to be a challenge. A team that surprised everyone in last year's tournament, the Silver Wolves came up just short in the loss to Davis in last year's title game.

"It's going to be a good game no matter who you're playing, because everyone is working as hard as they can," acknowledged Boggs. "That's why you can't overlook anybody at all."

Fremont was able to counter-attack a handful of times after the Hawks pushed players into the final third, but Silver Wolves playmaker Jordan Preator was always met with multiple Alta defenders to stop any chance of the equalizer.

"We knew he (Preator) was really fast, and had that break-away speed so we just made sure of where he was at all the time," said coach Mitchell.

With 11 seniors on this Alta squad, a chance for bringing a title to their school is within sight.

"It's been since 2006, so I think we're overdue for sure. We need one," said Boggs. "Just keep playing with the momentum we have, and we should have a good run."

Mitchell praised his boys, and also laid some groundwork for his team advancing further into the tournament.

"It's all one game at a time, do the best we can with our team and our game.

"That's what we know so that's what we have to do.""

Kevin did have an amazing game.

Fremont 2 - Roy 1

From the Standard Examiner:  "The Silver Wolves' Dalton Gullo and Alec Stimpson each scored to lift Fremont 2-1 to a victory over the Royals on Wednesday at Sand Ridge Park, securing Region 1's No. 4 seed.

The Silver Wolves finished their regular season at 10-5-1 and will face Alta in Tuesday's 5-A first round on the road.

Noah Jorgensen scored for Roy (7-6-2) in the first half to forge a 1-1 tie.

The Royals will take Region 1's No. 5 seed and will meet Region 2's No. 4 seed, either Hunter or Granger, in a 5-A play-in game on Saturday."

End of the season

A heartbreaking loss to Alta in Sandy tonight following a good soccer season.  The team played hard, Alta just snuck in one goal mid-way through the second half.  Kevin Mead had some amazing saves and the defense had multiple stops on corner kicks.  The offense had its' chances, but we were unable to get one into the net.

Thanks to all players, coaches and parents for a memorable season.

Congratulation to those players who will graduate next week.  Good luck in all of your endeavors.

Jordan Preator, Colton Strong, Gunner Burrell and Dalton Gullo each scored for Fremont (9-5-1).

Dylan Coffee and Kyle Coffee each scored for Syracuse."

Back to our winning ways.
We have secured the 4th place in Region 1 and will play the 1st place team from Region 4 on May 17th.

Go Silver Wolves!

Fremont 0 - Davis 5

From the Standard Examiner:  "At Kaysville's Angel Street Soccer Complex, the Darts offense exploded against the Silver Wolves.

Abinadi Samayoa scored twice, while John Taylor, Mitch Parkinson and Colton Cottrell each added one.

Mitch Jensen had the shutout his second straight and seventh of the season overall. Davis moves to 10-3-1; Fremont fell to 9-5-1."

We were not happy to lose this game, BUT we are still 9-5-1.  Not a bad season and we have the State Tournament ahead of us.  Time to re-group and play our best soccer.

Fremont 1 - Davis 0

From the Standard Examiner:  "PLAIN CITY -- After a dismal showing a week ago, the Silver Wolves needed a kick in the right direction.
Literally.
Sophomore forward Jordan Preator scored in the first overtime period to lift the Fremont High boy's soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Davis on Monday afternoon at Fremont High School.
The goal is Preator's team-best seventh tally of the season and moves the Silver Wolves to 7-4-0, snapping a two-game losing streak and moving within one point of the Darts in the Region 1 standings.

It was also a rematch of last season's state 5-A title game, which Davis won 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

For Davis, it marked another frustrating turn in a season that started out strongly.

Davis, which was 6-0-0 overall two weeks ago, is 1-2-1 and has been shut out in three of its last four games to drop into third place on the league table.

Kevin Mead earned the shutout in goal for Fremont, the Silver Wolves' fourth shutout of the season."

Fremont 1 - Viewmont 4

Although the score is a bit better than last time, we still left the field with a strike in the loss column.  Viewmont just appeared to be faster and more aggressive to the ball than Fremont did on this outing.  No excuses.  Fremont will have to change the recipe somehow to compete with Viewmont this year.

Fremont 0 - Weber 1

In a much better showing, the Silver Wolves took on Weber at Weber on Wednesday - a day later than scheduled, but lost in double overtime on a PK by Parker Dixon.  Fremont had opportunities to score, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.  The defense held through the game, ten minutes of the first overtime and nearly five minutes of the second overtime, but Weber was able to sneak one in on the PK.

Everyone would agree that Kevin Mead, at keep, had an amazing game at Weber with beautiful stops and great leadership on the field.  Way to go Kevin.

Fremont 3 - Clearfield 0

From the Standard Examiner:  " FREMONT 3, CLEARFIELD 0: At Clearfield, the Silver Wolves got early energy from Alec Stimpson and claimed the win.

Stimpson scored in the first minute, then assisted Zach Arrington on a second goal just nine minutes later. Jordan Praetor added a chip-shot goal in the 33 minute for Fremont (6-2-0).

Kevin Mead and Cayden Quayle shared the shutout in goal."

Did you hear?  Davis lost to Northridge!

These pictures are from a Clearfield parent, Nathan Goff.  He has a website and more of our pictures at http://www.fotoshots.us/.
Check it out.  You can order pictures from both the Varsity and Junior Varsity games at a reasonable price.
thanks, Nate.

Fremont ranked 17th in State by D News

17. Fremont (4-2-0)

In an article posted April 3rd.  The Deseret News has us at 17th.  I think we're better than that.

"Fremont #17:  Class: 5A

Was: 19. Last week: 2-0-0. Outlook: Bye week helped the 'Wolves recover with a pair of much-needed wins last week.

I'll have to watch this more closely.  Looks like old information.

Fremont 2 - Roy 1

From the Standard Examiner:  "At Plain City, the Wolves notched goals in each half to edge the Royals.

Dalton Gullo and Gunner Burrell each scored for Fremont, which won its third straight."

The Standard fails to mention that both of our goals were BEAUTIFUL with great passing by Fremont before the balls were slipped past Roy's goal keeper.  The Roy goal was a great shot that Kevin didn't have a chance to defend.

Fremont 6 - Syracuse 0

Great start to the season!  The team looked ready to play and play they did.  They were able to string together some nice passing attacks and ended up with five players scoring our six points.  The first score came in about six minutes (in both the first and second halves) and our keeper, Kevin Mead, didn't touch the ball for the first 23 minutes of the game.
We look forward to great things this year.  It promises to be a good one.

Fremont 4 - Northridge 1

From the Standard Examiner:  "At Layton, Zach Arrington had a pair of goals and Dalton Gullo contributed a pair of assists as the visiting Silver Wolves controlled the contest.

Jordan Praetor took a Gullo pass and drilled a goal early, then Arrington scored on an assist from Alic Taylor as Fremont built a 2-0 lead at the break.

Austin Jex scored on Gullo's second assist and Arrington added a late PK for Fremont. Kevin Mead and Kaden Quayle share goalleeping duties for the Silver Wolves.

Landon Farnsworth scored late for Northridge."

This was a beautiful day for playing and watching soccer.  Congratulations on a great game, Silver Wolves.

Fremont 3 - Layton 2

From the Standard Examiner:
"LAYTON -- The Silver Wolves aren't where they want to be.
Not even close.
The Fremont High School boys soccer, however, isn't afraid to admit it.
"We aren't even close to where we want to be," Fremont forward Jordan Preator said. "We want to get better; we want to be hitting our peak as we go into the state tournament."
Preator was the hero on Tuesday, scoring the game-winner in the 58th minute as the Silver Wolves rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat short-handed Layton in Region 1 action at Layton High School.
"I'm just trying to work hard," Preator said. "I want to do whatever I can do to help the team win."
Preator's goal was his team-best fourth of the young season, as Fremont snapped a two-game skid and moved to 3-2-0.

The Silver Wolves raced out the gate early, taking a 1-0 lead in less than 30 seconds on a goal from Dalton Gullo. Alec Stimpson earned the assist on the play.
Layton was knocked down to 10 men after a straight red card in the 15th minute, but the Lancers rapidly scored twice in a five-minute span to take a 2-1 lead. Jordan Steed scored both goals for Layton.
Matt Mitchell scored for Fremont against the run of play to make it 2-2 at halftime.
After Preator's go-ahead goal, Layton was hit with a second straight red, giving Fremont a two-man advantage. The Lancers (1-4-0) created several quality buildups and had a pair of shots at an equalizer, but ultimately the Silver Wolves' defense held when it counted.

Standard Examiner, March 29

From the Standard Examiner, March 29, 211:
"Another team that was nail-bitingly closer to a state soccer title last year was Fremont.
The Silver Wolves started just 3-3 in 2010, but ripped off a 13-game winning streak before falling 1-0 to Region 1 rival Davis in the state 5-A title game at Rio Tinto.
Much like the Lakers, the Silver Wolves return numerous key pieces of their squad, including stellar sophomore Jordan Praeter, who finished last season with eight goals and scored in six of Fremont's final eight games in 2010.
Praeter is again leading the way early for the Silver Wolves, having notched three goals. Jesse Wilson has two goals for Fremont, which sits at 2-2-0.
Davis (4-0-0), Viewmont (3-0-0) and Weber (3-1-0) are all off to strong starts in Region 1 action, as are two teams that missed the postseason last year - Roy and Northridge."

Viewmont 4 - Fremont 0

From the Deseret News:  "BOUNTIFUL — Midway through last season, Viewmont suffered an embarrassing four-goal defeat at home to Fremont. The Vikings never fully recovered from the stunning loss, while Fremont rode the momentum of the victory all the way to last year's 5A final.
Viewmont and its eight returning starters couldn't wait for a little payback on Tuesday.
"Turned their season around, and ours. We've been waiting, the kids didn't like that," said Viewmont coach Dave Wigham. "I told them be careful what you wish for, they're coming."
The Vikings didn't back down from the challenge in Tuesday's Region 1 clash, dominating the midfield on their way to a 4-0 victory over Fremont that more than avenged last year's loss.
Justin Allen led the way with a pair of goals while Dillon Richins chipped in with two assists.
It was the type of result against a quality opponent that confirmed what Wigham knew all along, his team is pretty good.
Viewmont controlled possession from the opening kick, but midway through the first half most of that possession had gone to waste with players getting too fancy with the ball around the penalty area. Once they settled down and played "Viking Soccer Two Touch," the game quickly became a mismatch.
"We were like, 'guys why are we dribbling so much. We've got to pull the trigger,' " said Wigham.
The Vikings finally capitalized on all the possession in the 20th minute, as some quick passing around the box led to a perfectly weighed diagonal ball from Richins to Matt Nielson, who calmly buried the shot for the 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the goal, Fremont midfielder Alec Stimpson left the match with a mild concussion, which only added to Viewmont's superiority in the midfield.
"It was a big thing to control the midfield. The game is won in the midfield, so if you can control that you can end up in the win," said Richins.
Viewmont doubled its advantage late in the first half as Allen corralled a booming kick from keeper Hayden Blackburn near midfield, and then raced past a Fremont defender for the breakaway finish.
It was much of the same in the second half as Viewmont dictated the tempo, with Allen tacking on a goal in the 47th minute and then Jeromy Heward capping the scoring in the 77th minute.
Viewmont improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Fremont is off to another slow start this year with a 2-2 record.
Wigham believes Region 1 is far too deep for anyone to go undefeated this year, but with his senior captain Richins and freshman Lucas Cawley running the show in the midfield, Viewmont will be in the thick of the region race all year.
"It's really nice cause he's a good quality player, it really helps to have somebody who can control the midfield with me," said Richins.

Blackburn came up with an acrobatic save in the 70th minute to earn his second shutout of the season."

Parker Dixon, Ken Gordon and Tyler Murdock each scored for Weber, which improved to 2-0-0 in league play.

Clearfield rained out in Plain City.

From the Standard Examiner:

"FREMONT 4, CLEARFIELD 0: At Plain City, the Silver Wolves posted another strong defense and Fremont built a big first-half margin.

Jordan Preator scored twice and Brady Craft added a goal for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Dalton Gullo, who assisted on one of Preator's goals scored in the second half on an assist from Preator.

Austin Jex and Craft led the Fremont defense, with Kevin Mead picking up the shutout."

The Standard didn't talk about how amazing those goals were...remember Jordan's bicycle-lay-out goal or Brady's lost it, found it, shot it, scored goal.  We'd like to see one of each of those every game.

We need pictures.  Talk to your parents, your friends, and Mr. Smith and get me some film clips and pics to share.
