From the Standard Examiner: "A little pushing and shoving never hurt anyone. In fact, rough play is almost an expectation when two rivals like Fremont and Weber meet on the soccer field.
"There was definitely more pushing, bumping, and pulling today," Fremont junior Scott Chambers said. "It's a rivalry and it does mean more to us, the team with the cooler head is going to get the game."
Whether or not the Silver Wolves had the cooler heads is debatable, since both teams battled hard for 80 minutes, but Chambers and Fremont did earn a 1-0 win on Tuesday afternoon and bragging rights until the two teams meet agin on May 5.
Derek Lee used an assist from Cory Craynor to put the Silver Wolves ahead in the 13th minute. Even with the early lead, Fremont kept up its offensive pressure and in the process denied Weber many significant shots on goal.
Not that it mattered, Fremont's solid defense frustrated the Warriors' speedy forwards all afternoon, and anything that made it through the back line was stopped by junior goalkeeper Luke Weston, who was making just his second appearance ever in goal.
"Our defense was awesome today," Fremont coach Bryan Gines said. "Weber has fast players so we played off them. We didn't allow them to get open."
