The Standard Examiner has been very kind to the Darts all season. This is just further evidence that they REALLY like Davis.
"About 10 minutes into Tuesday's showdown between Region 1 boys's soccer heavyweights Davis and Fremont, one of the Silver Wolves' talented offensive stars unspooled a bolt of lightning from deep in the right corner.
Darts' goalkeeper J.T. Webster wasn't rattled.
The senior netminder made a fantastic dive to the pitch and smothered the shot, one of a dozen or so crucial defensive stands made by Webster during the course of a hard-fought 1-0 Davis victory at Angel Street Soccer Complex.
"We've just had different people step up for us, " Webster said, "every game it has been a different person. Getting that (first save) gave me confidence. It reminded me what I could do."
Davis needed every stop Webster gave them against Fremont's frenzied offensive attack, with the Darts becoming the first team this season to shut out the Silver Wolves.
"J. T. is amazing back there," Davis coach Souli Phongasavath said. "When you have a keeper that plays like that, if gives the defense in front of him confidence. It lets them be more aggressive.
Senior midfielder Gentrie Maag provided the only goal in the 40th minute, taking the ball away from a Fremont defender on the edge of the final third and driving to the top of the box before unleasing a shot around the Silver wolves' charging keeper just seconds before the halftime whistle blew for the 1-0 advantage.
"Were working on getting better; on getting more consistent," Webster said. "I think we've gotten better as the year has gone on."
Fremont continued its aggressive offensive play in the second half, producing several quality scoring opportunities that were denied, either by Webster or the Darts' defenders.
Davis' win snapped a six-game unbeated streak by Fremont, dating back to the first meeting between the team - a 7-2 Darts win."
Won't it be great when we beat them in the post-season?
Our second team lost to the JV Darts 3-1.
